Key Points
Podcasts are a rapidly growing channel for finding, building, and reaching a significant audience in a cost-effective, scalable way.
Two ways for content experts to take advantage of this emerging channel:
- Host a podcast
- Guest for podcasts
In 2020, the difference between podcast that are operated by media companies and corporations became even more evident. Three categories have resulted:
A. Corporate – every major news outlet has multiple podcasts with commercial sponsors and significant audiences. Examples of corporate podcasts: NYT, WSJ, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, LA Times, Washington Post, and more.
B. Professional – Individual brands across a broad spectrum of categories are emerging, from Comedy (e.g, Joe Rogan, host of The Joe Rogan Show), to Everyday Hacks (Tim Ferriss, host of The Tim Ferriss Show) to Small Business (e.g. Pat Flynn, host of Smart Passive Income) to Motivation (e,g, Tony Robbins, host of The Tony Robbins Show).
C. Amateur – Anyone with a laptop can host a podcast, risking only time, minimal capital, and reputation.
